1. Joining PBHC

1. Who can join PBHC?
In a single word – anyone.
PBHC welcomes players of all abilities and levels of experience, from complete beginners to experienced players. Our junior section starts from age 7 (Year 3), and there’s no upper age limit – if you want to play hockey, we’d love to have you.

2. I’ve never played hockey before – can I join?
Never having played before is a great reason to come and try it out. You don’t need to know the rules or own any specific equipment to join – just come along and give it a go.

3. I haven’t played hockey for years – can I come back to it?
Absolutely. We understand that joining a new club can be daunting and nerves can sometimes get in the way of enjoying that first session.
That’s why we suggest coming along to three free training sessions before making any commitment. It gives you a chance to meet everyone, get a feel for the club and, most importantly, enjoy some hockey before deciding whether PBHC is for you

4. Can I come along and try hockey before joining?
You can absolutely come along and try hockey before joining. We understand that joining a new club can be daunting, and nerves can sometimes ruin the first experience, so we suggest trying three free training sessions before making any commitment.

5. Do I need to contact someone before coming to training?
Ideally, yes. You can get in touch using our contact form, email one of the club officials or send us a message on instagram (@pottersbarhc).
That way, we’ll know you’re coming and can be on the lookout for you at training, so you get a proper PBHC welcome when you arrive.

6. What should I expect at my first training session?
There’s usually a bit of a knockaround before training starts, while others use the time to catch up in the dugout.
Training starts with a warm-up and stretches, followed by skills work in small groups to learn or hone the basics. Next come drills, where we put those skills into practice and replicate situations you might encounter in a match. We usually finish with some gameplay.
If joining in with a game during your first session feels daunting, that’s absolutely fine. We’ll support you to get involved in whatever way you feel comfortable.

7. What do I need to bring to my first training session?
Comfortable sports clothes, suitable trainers, shin pads, a mouthguard and a drink.
Don’t worry if you don’t have a hockey stick yet – we have spare sticks in a range of sizes that you can borrow.

8. Do PBHC hold trials, and how will I know which team is right for me?
PBHC doesn’t hold trials. We just want you to come to training and get involved.
As we get to know you and you get to know us, our coaches and captains will help find the right level of hockey for you.

9. How do I become a PBHC member?
If you decide to join after your free trial sessions, speak to one of the captains or committee members at training and they’ll help you through the process.
You’ll need to sign up to Pitchero as a player and pay your membership subscription. If you plan to play in matches, we’ll also help you register with England Hockey through GMS.
It really is as simple as that.

10. Who should I contact if I’m thinking about joining?
For adult hockey, please contact any of the following:
Men’s hockey: James McCormick
Women’s hockey: Laura Krantz and Ruth Hall
General enquiries: Any of the PBHC officials found here.
For junior hockey, please contact Paul Brady.
