Mens 1st XI Match Report

Stevenage 1st XI v Potters Bar Men's 1st XI

22 October 2011 | by Chris Chittleborough

Potters Bar came to Stevenage believing this would be the game to turn their season around.  Bar started positively and had the majority of possession in the first 15 minutes.  The midfield took control of the game and created a flurry of early chances breaking down the wings.

On the slow bobbly pitch the aerials over the Stevenage defence proved successful in the early exchanges.  The only threat the opposition posed to the Bar defence was on the counter attack.

As the first half drew to a close, Potters Bar felt they had the better chances and if they started the second half with the same attitude as the first half they would surely be able to convert their chances and go on to win the game.

Within 5 minutes of the restart, Potters Bar deservedly took the lead after the possession was won in midfield and Miles Tomkins received the ball on the left wing before he beat his marker, drove into the D and delivered a pass to Mark Turpin to calmly slot the ball past the keeper.  The team was confident that goal would be the turning point in their season.

However within 30 seconds from the restart the Stevenage where pressurising the Bar defense, won the ball and ran down the by-line before pulling the ball back towards the p-spot before it was slotted pass Jonny Weller.

Potters Bar continued to press the opposition however the game lost control with a couple of strong challenges going against them.

Stevenage won a short corner and managed to convert the rebound.  With Bar having to attack, Stevenage managed to pick up a third on the break.

The final score ended 4-1 and Potters Bar walked away knowing that again they were very close to taking all three points.   Hopefully next week’s game against Thurrock will be the turning point for their season.

Final Score: Potters Bar 4 - 1 Stevenage

Goal Scorers: Mark Turpin

Team: The Usual Suspects
