Mens 2nd XI Match Report
Potters Bar Men's 2nd XI v Cheshunt 2nd XI
24 September 2011 | by Richie Highes
Potters Bar 2s welcomed two new faces to their starting line-up but it was business as usual as they began the new season and life in Division 6 in typical winning style - Ben Balmfourth and Charlie Carr both giving assured performances on their debut’s in goal and central defence respectively and adding a (much needed?) youthful injection to the rear guard.

With a quartet of cheerleaders in the form of Hughes, Turpin, Tomkins and Whybrow providing early encouragement from the side-lines a cut throat start was demanded.

However the first touch of the season - provided by Dave Fennell - was to give the opposition the ball (Dave, apparently forgetting that close season friendlies were over, charitably hitting the ‘push back' forward to the Cheshunt midfield). Much of the opening play was focussed in the Cheshunt half and it seemed only a matter of minutes until deadlock would be broken - which it was but at the wrong end...a rusty Bar defence failing to stop the Cheshunt right winger from finding his way into the D and slotting home from close range.

Despite going a goal down Bar continued to dominate and soon found themselves on level terms - Danny Becker finding his way onto the team sheet and in the processes a brief flirtation with first place on the leading goal scorers table.
The play continued to favour Bar and Dave Fennell added two more first half goals before Danny Becker's made it 4-1 to Bar when his otherwise faultless impression of Fernando Torres fell short at the final hurdle...Danny dispossessing a Cheshunt centre back to break through one on one with the keeper, shifting the ball to his left leaving the keeper stranded only to knock the ball into the open goal where the aforementioned Spaniard had chosen to aim for row Z. If Chelsea's Spanish striker is valued at £50m one can only imagine what kind of price tag should be put on Danny...

More goals were expected in the second half with Bar benefiting from two rolling subs against an opposition lacking any fresh legs to bring on. However despite the bulk of play remaining in the Cheshunt half for the rest of the game the only goal came when Cheshunt hit on a rare break, giving Bar keeper Ben Balmforth little chance two on one. Tempers flared at times in the second half as the game became more physical, even the vice captaining finding himself in a somewhat pointless and self-defeating argument about manners. However when the full time whistle blew both Bar and Cheshunt alike retreated to the club house in good spirits for a feast of breads and hot dogs and meats - all ably supplied by the Captain.
