Ladies 1st XI Match Report
Potters Bar Ladies 1st XI v Welwyn Garden City 1st XI
28 January 2012 | by Sarah Jowett
A more pleasant midday pushback for Bar this week and even more surprisingly, a rather youthful looking team, relatively speaking.
Bar were straight into their stride and some lovely one touch hockey saw the ball pinging from front to back. Bar’s first goal came after 10 minutes when Lucy Edwards played the ball into the D and after a few shots, the ball was eventually bundled past the keeper by Sarah Jowett.
Welwyn looked to push forward but with Hannah Nevin and Ashley Rouse intercepting their passes the threat was limited. A fine run by Jo Spinks set up Bar’s second as she dribbled round two defenders and passed to Edwards who laid the ball across for Jowett to score with a reverse stick shot.
Bar were now dominant with Emily Sherlock and Caroline Stanners shaking off the close attentions of their markers to build further attacks. A quick sideline ball from Stanners saw Bar fire the ball into the D for Caroline Partridge to drag the ball round the keeper and slot in Bar’s third.
The second half began in much the same vein with Bar pushing forward for more goals. Shelly Farmer and Vanessa Porter worked the ball well down the right feeding Edwards who once again generously set up Jowett to complete her hat-trick.
Bar’s fifth goal wasn’t far behind with Emily Sherlock belting in her first goal of the season direct from a short corner, Stanners doing well to get out of the way of the shot!
Drama was to follow shortly afterwards as the Welwyn keeper injured herself attempting to cut out a shot from Porter. Porter scored but the keeper was unable to continue and was replaced by a kicking back.
There was little action upfront after this which left Mo Gough and Faye Jowett at the back to fight it out for play of the day, Mo juggling the ball with her knees when it wouldn’t come down quick enough for her to clear and Faye making a lovely sweeping clearance which sadly failed to touch the ball. Good of them both to provide some entertainment in the last 10 minutes of the match.
With a fine 6-0 win in the bag it was left to part time coach Claire Moore to impart her observations – apparently she hadn’t seen so much pace from a Bar ladies team in 35 years, somehow I don’t think she meant me!!!
A great team performance leaving the ladies to enjoy their three week break.
