Potters Bar Ladies 1st XI v Southend 1st XI

Potters Bar Ladies 1s kicked off their 2011/12 league season hosting Southend Ladies 1s at home. Southend have come down from the league above so Potters Bar were aware of the tough game ahead.
Potters Bar welcomed a number of new players into their side for this coming season including Ashleigh Rouse, Clare Rose, Amy Li and Jess Gilbey who all had a fantastic first game for the 1s.
Both teams began the game with strong attacks. It was Bar that scored first with a break out of defence which found Anna Walker on the right who passed a great ball into Caroline Partridge in central midfield, she was aware of Sarah Jowett making a run goal bound and threaded the ball through the Southend defence for Jowett to out-trick the keeper to give Bar the 1-0 lead.
Southend pressed hard towards the end of the first half and a well-worked attacking move around Bar’s defence saw their central midfielder take a strike at the top of the circle which ended up in the roof of the goal bringing the game to 1-1 going into half time.
Potters Bar came into the second half knowing that they needed to maintain their work level to keep Southend at bay. However, the opposition kept Bar’s defence busy and won a short corner mid way through the half which they were fortunate enough to fumble over the goal line to give them the lead.
Bar continued to work hard and had a couple of attacking opportunities. A great run from midfield by Emily Sherlock found herself one on one with the Southend keeper who pulled off a great save to deny Sherlock drawing the game back level.
Southend scored another late goal to give them a 3-1 win. Potters Bar played well despite the final score and should feel confident in their capabilities for next week’s game away at Blueharts.
