Ladies 2nd XI Match Report
Welwyn Garden City v Potters Bar Ladies 2nd XI
30 October 2010 | by Jenni Harrington
For a friendly this game saw a very professional display from Potter’s. With a mixture of players from both the 2nd and 3rd teams, there was much to be said for the communication on the field. From the first whistle the team went on the attack and the oppositions defence held strong until a shot from Louise Allmark was saved into the path of Katy Francis who obliged and took her chance putting them 1-0 up. Runs from the midfield from Shelley farmer and Clare Rose constantly proved a threat whilst linking well with a very fluid attack force comprising of Louise Allmark, Katy Francis and Vanessa Garner. Given the time seen in the Welwyn defending circle it was unsurprising the number of short corners awarded.
The score remained 1-0 at the break and the second half started in much the same fashion as the first had. With no substitutes and 2 compromised players (one ill and the other self inflicted) Potter’s managed to keep the tempo and attack well for the majority of the second half but Welwyn showed great character to keep the score at 1-0 and eventually worked their way to attacking situations. Sadly for them the Potter’s defence and midfield were more than ready for this. Ruth Spencer was at the heart of the defence in a sweeper role with Vicky Watts supporting her. Charlotte Sayers and Laura Cullen were more like attacking full backs but both were back tackling when called upon. Michelle Lewis and Louise Allmark both managed to pick up loose balls and keep attacks going throughout the match and keep the opposition under fire. The one time Welwyn were able to break free of the defence and shoot Jennifer Harrington saved and soon after Clare Rose had the ball outside their circle and crossed a perfect ball into the path of Vanessa Garner who struck the ball with power passed the keeper.
Clare Rose deservedly got the player of the match award as her running gave many options to the team whilst causing many problems to the opposition. Ashley Rouse was awarded the wooden spoon for her failure to play due to the previous night. Esther Strous was the teams official for the fixture, half to prevent the effort of finding someone else to do so and also to give herself a break from playing in games. This however, to the delight of the team, backfired as she ended up running more than normal to keep up with the play. How satisfying ;)
Final Score: Potters Bar 2 - 0 WGC
