Ladies 1st XI Match Report
Welwyn Garden City 1st v Potters Bar Ladies 1st XI
13 November 2010 | by Karen Lawson
…and so the Ladies 1st X travelled north to Hatfield University for this weeks league fixture against local rivals Welwyn, safe in the knowledge that Claire Moores Greater London A-Z (1982 edition) did in fact feature the A1, this treasured publication had been a very useful tool in weeks gone by.
The Ladies started with a positive flair, some good strong attacks were thwarted by the Welwyn defence. Emily Sherlock making some good runs down the right well supported by Anna Walker. Potters Bar senior section of Sue, Claire Moore and Karen Lawson gave away nothing in defence, Glynis Chiswell, making a welcome return to the 1st XI, looked comfortable in goal. Both Caroline Partridge and Caroline Stanners continued to fire some fine goal line crosses at the Welwyn defence but Bar lacked the finishing touch. Unable to covert several short corners, Bar were soon to be rewarded with a goal after Anna Walkers superb cross from the right found Caroline Partridge who neatly placed the ball in the Welwyn net. Welwyn's forward line struggled to make any progress through Bars defence, causing a change of tactic and a swapsy of wingers, Faye Jowett's tackling and marking had worked! Although one goal up Bars first touch seemed to be lacking, a lot of possession being lost by reckless passing.
Bar went into the half time whistle 1 - 0 up. All was well.
A constructive half time talk saw a noticeable change in attitude and effort in the Bar team for the second half, some strong midfield pressure and , some good build up around the back of play. Swanni and Claire Moore confidently taking the ball up the pitch. Bar looked confident. Bar were soon to be awarded a short corner and were able to convert this making it 2 - 0. Followed shortly after with a fine goal from Stanners. All was rosy in the Bar camp… alas ….
The first of the Welwyn goals came in the form of long ball out of midfield landing in the lap of the unmarked left wing, on the approach of the Bar sweeper, a neat pass to the supporting centre forward saw the opposition put the ball past the Bar keeper. 3 - 1. Having no shorts awarded against them in the first half Bar all of a sudden found themselves defending several shorts one after the other. After three well defended corners the Welwyn tactic of "ball back to taker" took its toll on the defence and the ball slipped under the keepers feet and onto the back board. A set play tactic that had been discussed earlier by the defence as being the hardest to mark! Frustrated and angry with themselves the Bar ladies continued to work hard but gave away yet another unnecessary short corner in the dying seconds, the final whistle blew and the corner struck, the rebound found the Welwyn right mid who thumped the ball past the Bar defence into the goal. 3 - 3. A hotly disputed goal, the Welwyn umpire chosing not to blow the "back of stick" tactic used earlier in this set play. Three goals scored 3 point thrown away.
Final Score: Potters Bar 3 - 3 Welwyn Garden City
Goal Scorers: Caroline Partridge, Caroline Stanners, Sarah Jowett
