Ladies 1st XI Match Report
Wapping 2nd XI v Potters Bar Ladies 1st XI
30 October 2010 | by Caroline Partridge
The sun was shining as the team set off down the A10 for Wapping, armed with more methods of navigation than you can shake a hockey stick at. Having only gone round the Gherkin twice, the team finally arrived at the Great Wall of Wapping. Following a bizarre set of conversations on the long journey down (breeding chickens, breast-feeding and kosher food) the team turned their thoughts to the game.
Just as we went out onto the undulating patchwork pitch, with Claire Moore’s lucky atlas on the sideline, the heavens opened. The match started fairly evenly, but eventually started to go Bar’s way with a number of short corners and attacking plays. Anna Walker was unlucky to have a cracking goal disallowed in the first half. Wapping continued to attack with some great diving saves from keeper Mo Gough and some great defending by Karen Lawson, Claire Moore and Sue Richardson.
With the match still scoreless, the second half started in a similar vein. Caroline Partridge had a number of good runs up the middle and there was some good play up the wings through Lucy Edwards and Vanessa Porter. Midfielders Walker and Swanni Herrmann distributed a number of balls to Laura Pointing and Jo Spinks but Bar failed to capitalise. As time progressed, Wapping worked the ball into Bar’s defence and with less than ten minutes to go, Wapping managed to scrape the ball into the back of the net.
This wasn’t Bar’s most inspiring match and one we’d probably rather forget, but we did get to see the Olympics site on the way home.
