Mens 2nd XI Match Report

Stevenage 4th XI v Potters Bar Mens 2nd XI

26 February 2011 | by Freddie Waite

After a delicious 6-0 victory over Letchworth the previous week, the team were in good spirits arriving in Stevenage.  Though with a surface more likened to a bmx track than a hockey pitch, which played host to a frustrating 1-1 draw last season, cruelly denying Bar’s hopes of promotion, this was certainly not a time for complacency.

The clash kicked off with a trademark push-back by Freddie Waite, which commenced a neat sequence of passes, eventually leading to the opener, I think.  Ed Ogbourne sneaked un-noticed beyond their right half, and with one touch, slapped the ball into the far corner from the narrowest of angles.  Bar continued to dominate, and deservedly doubled their lead mid-way into the half – Miles Edson neatly firing home from the edge of the D.  It was all looking too easy until in the final minutes of the half, Stevenage were awarded a penalty flick following their short corner.  I’m not quite sure why, I didn’t see it, and neither did Screech Powers.  This was subsequently converted, and the teams walked back into the tunnel with the score 2-1 to Bar.

As quickly as we had scored in the first half, Andy Stokes restored a two goal cushion with an perplexing strike from his reverse stick.   Bar continued to dominate but failed to close the game off after an array of goal scoring opportunities.  Miles Edson again had the ball in the net, but he kicked it and we all saw it.   A frustrated home side, not in the least bit impressed with Richard Hughes’ ‘Swan Lake’ interlude, posed little threat to Dave Summers and the Bar goal until some lax defending (Nish) gifted Stevenage with a glimmer of hope.  5 minutes of squeaky bum-time followed, but Bar cleverly kept the ball out of from harms reach and saw out the remainder of the fixture. 3-2.

Final Score: Potters Bar 3 -2 Stevenage 4

Goal Scorers: Ed Ogbourne, Miles Edson and Andy Stokes

Team: Freddie "can't remember".
