Ladies 2nd XI Match Report

St Albans 3rd XI v Potters Bar 2nd XI

12 February 2011 | by Ashleigh Rouse

“Once upon a time” seems to be the trend in starting off match reports these days, so this is how I shall..... Potters Bar Ladies 2nds travelled to Clarence Park early one morning to face St Albans 3rds.

On initial assessment of the pitch, the team had to focus on accuracy of passing as the surface was quite hard and the ball travelled at speed across it.

The match proved challenging, but Bar worked hard to protect their goal and several attempts at scoring were made. The first came from Sarah who drove the ball up pitch and into the D. Allmark and Strous were also denied goals after breaking through St. Albans’ defence.

Unfortunately, inexperienced umpiring lead to disappointing decisions in the D in both halves – the first half could have seen Bar with the opportunity of scoring from a few more shorts. In the second half, defence were given a hard time with conceding short corners including 2 in the last few minutes. Rouse managed to block/detour a couple of balls and, when the slip was made, Lawson never failed to rid the D of the ball. Rose, Farmer and Lewis in midfield worked hard to help defence out on numerous occasions – great team effort guys!

The general consensus of opinion was that this week’s match was one of Bar’s best performances all season, although the team still need to work on utilising the whole pitch (not just the left-hand-side!) and converting some strikes into the D into goals!

Joint Player of the match went to Lewis and Karen. Lewis impressed the team in the second half when she was moved to right midfield and worked very well with the defence to keep the ball out of the D and Karen who worked tirelessly all match in defence, with some fantastic clearances. Well done!

Wooden spoon went to Allmark, pretty much because she hasn’t had it yet and the whole team worked so hard that nobody really deserved it! Oh and maybe Allmark had a little battle with St. Albans’ keeper at one point.... :)

Player of the Match: Michelle Lewis and Karen Lawson
