Mens 1st XI Match Report

Potters Bar Men 1st XI v Berkhamsted 1st XI

09 October 2010 | by Rob Donoghue

Potters Bar travelled to Berkhampstead with the East Hockey League website having them down as losing 5-0 to Hertford the previous week.

This did not however fool Berko as they did their homework by checking the score on the Bar website.

Starting the game at a high tempo it was easy to see that PB were intent on continuing on from where they left off the week before. Some quick sharp passing across the back line enabled the team to create space down the wings and use there pace to expose Berko's defence.

The game was proving to be quite tight with the Bar defence holding off pressure from Berkhampstead until the deadlock was broken midway through the first half. A quick breakaway goal came from inside the bar D with some crisp passing up the field and awesome movement making space for Mark Turpin to break clear and round the keeper to make it 1-0.

The second goal came soon after in similar circumstances with a quick break enabling Turpin to round the keeper once more and make it 2-0.

Goal number three then ensued with a neat pass down the left wing by Owen Hughes to Turpin who on the turn saw Dave Fennell breaking free down the right. Fennell unselfishly passed the ball across the D to Miles Tomkins who smashed the ball in to the roof of the net.

The Potters Bar defence then sustained some pressure from Berko before the break with a spat of short corners amounting to no more than a smart save from Geoff in goal.

At the half time break Bar were determined to build on there lead and put the game out of reach which is what they done after only a few minutes in to the 2nd half with Tomkins adding a second of his own after a rebound from a short corner.

The fifth and sixth goal came soon after with Turpin once again rounding the keeper. Goal number seven then followed with an awesome through ball by Ed Newbury finding Turpin in aches of space. Turpin spotting Fennell's precise run slipped the ball to his right enabling him to finish in to an open net.

Berko piled on the pressure towards the end of the game and managed to score a goal after two goal line clearances from the bar defence to end the game 7-1.

Another all round solid defensive and counter attacking performance from the Bar leave them with 6 points after three games, regardless of what the league website says.
