Ladies 2nd XI Match Report

Potters Bar Ladies 2nd XI v Bishops Stortford 4th XI

02 October 2010 | by Michelle Lewis

Once upon a time, a lovely sunny autumnal day turned grey and wet the minute the two teams stepped on the pitch for pushback. However this change in weather did nothing to dampen Potters Bar resolve and determination to carry on their great start to the season from the previous weeks win at St Neots.

Bishops Stortford won the toss and started the game attacking, but a strong bar midfield and defence quashed any initial attempts at an early lead, from a young opposition. Early attacks proved fruitless as Bar’s nerves seemed to get the better of them. That was, until a fumble from the opposition’s keeper caused a goal mouth scuffle leading to Bar taking the lead with Liz Finding nipping the ball over the line.

The first half from there was reasonably even for a good while with both teams making some great passing play through midfield. As half time was closing in a second goal came from a drive up the right with Lotti (charlotte) pickup finding the backboard, from some great team work, giving Bar a 2-0 lead at the break.

The half time talk was a very simple message… ‘more of the same please girls’, which is exactly what was delivered and then some. Bar started the second half with an awesome confidence and attacked from the off. Some lovely team work through the midfield, showed in strong passing between new girl Helen Stovin, Liz and Michelle Lewis up the left with none able to find the back of the net. Emma Passmore played well in the centre taking the ball on her own up through the middle was unlucky not to score.

The third goal came from a break from defence by Liz beating several opposition and a well timed pass through their last defender to find charlotte who dinked it straight into the backboard.

Mid way though the second half Bar nearly got their fourth goal from a lovely strike on goal from Laura Cullen, following a break out of defence, but unfortunately both liz and Jo Spinks missed the opportunity on the line and the ball went wide left. By this point Bar were continuously on the attack and should have had more on the score board.

In a Bar side heavy in defender numbers, some players were given the opportunity to play higher up field than they were used to. Namely Ashley Rouse, playing a stint in right mid, drove hard up the right hand side playing some lovely passing play with Emma and Lotti, was extremely unlucky not to score.

The final goal came late on from a classic Esther Strous short corner, from a well positioned inject from Liz.

Bishops Stortford managed to break out on several occasions but were never really a threat in the D with Ruth Spencer playing on top form clearing everything that came her way.

Final Score: Potters Bar 4 - 0 Bishops Stortford

Goal Scorers: Lotti Pickup (2), Liz Finding, Esther Strous
