Ladies 1st XI Match Report

Potters Bar Ladies 1st XI v Letchworth 1st XI

12 February 2011 | by Claire Moore

This was a day to look on the positives, rather than dwell on a disappointing result.

Having had a good match before Christmas against Letchworth, Potters Bar were keen to take points from the opposition.  Their pre-match training session brought the highly tuned Potters Bar athletes to peak for the mid-day start – but little had they reckoned on yet another psychological attack by Letchworth.  At home, they flung us out of their “dug-out”, but delaying the arrival of their umpire by more than half an hour was inspired.  The PB team, formerly a coiled spring ready to pounce, had flopped.  On the positive side, if we weren’t so fit, perhaps it wouldn’t have affected us so much…

Within minutes of the start, skilful teamwork by Letchworth compounded by naïve defending provided goalie Glenys Chiswell numerous opportunities to hone her one on one technique.  She didn’t appreciate this as much as she might and despite many good saves, shoring up the defence with Sue Richardson and the solid work of Laura Cullen on the right, the opposition gradually notched up the score for a 0 – 6 lead at half time.

The briefest of brief half time briefs allowed Big Ed to suggest we could try to keep possession of the ball and not run around like headless chickens.  The Bar took his advice and the game became more even with Carolines Partridge and Stanners able to perform some of their usual attacks into the opposing circle.  Anna Walker continued to overcome the obvious 4 ft height advantage of her opponent and before long the Bar had released a ball to Sarah Jowett with an open goal beckoning.  Missing it, she contrived to entangle herself around the defenders and gain a penalty flick.  Frankly, this was poorly converted by Anna Walker who stupidly bounced the ball off the goalie’s stick and only by chance did the ball finally make it to the top left corner of the goal.

Potters Bar continued to fight successfully for the ball with further attacks assisted ably by Katie The-New-Vet, for whom the match must have been a baptism of fire. A last goal was conceded but a 1 – 1 second half draw had to be considered good.

Finally Claire Moore wishes to emphasize that she really isn’t bitter that her only real opportunity to ever score a goal was taken away by the nomination of Walker for the stroke.  She probably doesn’t know how to let anyone’s tyres down either.

Final Score: Potters Bar 1 - 6 Letchworth

Goal Scorers: Anna Walker
