Ladies 1st XI Match Report
Potters Bar Ladies 1st XI v Havering 1st XI
20 November 2010 | by Anna Walker
With the ladies 1st XI on home territory against top of the league Havering, optimism had clearly been left at last week’s match, only to return following a detailed, motivating and entertaining recollection of last season’s match by Jowett Sr. Unlike the lethargic start highlighted by previous opposition Bar were the first to warm up, and set out from the start with determination and motivated play.
Bar were quick to pounce on any wayward balls until the young and dainty Havering opposition from last season soon showed their ever increasing maturity and experience with some skilful and determined team play leading to a well worked goal being slipped past the Bar keeper . Bar reacted well, developing their linking play producing some well worked balls from Moore and MiMi to Stanners and Sherlock before a long ball from Walker was skilfully controlled by Edwards and slipped past the Havering keeper equalising the score to 1-1. With this boost in morale Bar continued to chase down loose balls and players to no avail when a quick break by the Havering attack resulted in an overload of the Bar defence which saw the beginning of a flourish of goals from the well practiced opposition.
At half time a deflated and frustrated Bar side were re-motivated by a constructive half time talk from Partridge and Moore. The dynamic duo of Edwards and Jowett Sr. Had a flurry of well worked balls from the midfield of Hermann, Sherlock, Stanners and Walker which were unfortunately saved by the frustratingly skilful Havering keeper. Despite the tireless work of the bar defence of Sue, Claire, MiMi and Caroline P a further spattering of goals were conceded. A debut in defence from Porter provided a much needed injection of determination and speed further dampening the Havering flair which had been seen in the first half. The final 15 minutes were based in the Havering half with many unlucky short corners and shots failing to be converted including a renowned touch from Jowett in the ‘D’ being miraculously saved by the keeper’s helmet.
Despite the disappointing score line the Bar side should be consoled by the fact that their standard of play was greatly improved from recent weeks and hope to build on this next week against Blueharts 1st XI.
