Ladies 1st XI Match Report

Potters Bar 1st XI v Wapping 2nd XI

18 September 2010 | by Caroline Partridge

On Saturday Potters Bar Ladies 1s played their first league game of the 2010-2011 season on their home ground at Dame Alice Owens School against Wapping 2s.

Potters Bar took on a new team formation to create a more attacking line up.  Despite having some width troubles at the beginning of the game Bar dominated early possession and pressed on the Wapping defence.

Anna Walker and new player to the team, Swanni Herrmann, took control in midfield and worked well to cut out any Wapping advances and delivered the ball back into attack.

Potters Bar’s constant pressure paid off half way through the first half which a great challenge from Vanessa Porter on the right wing, which allowed her to take the ball around her defender and had time to play a perfect cross into the circle to Sarah Jowett who calmly placed the ball just out of reach of the Wapping keeper into the far corner.

Bar knew they had to keep working hard as Wapping were a very strong team and played some excellent passing hockey to keep Bar on their toes.  The strong defence of Sue Richardson, Claire Moore and Karen Lawson worked well as a unit and kept any Wapping attacks at bay which brought Bar’s second goal.

A excellent ball from midfield by Walker found Jowett just outside the circle, Caroline Stanners had made a long run up the left which Jowett spotted and played a perfect pass goal-wards which fooled the Wapping keeper and Stanners was able to smash the ball over the goal line to double Bar’s lead.

During the second half, Wapping stepped up a gear and Bar had to work even harder to maintain their lead.  A slight lapse in concentration at the back allowed Wapping to attack into the circle and produce some short corners to which Bar were able to clear most of effectively.  However, a rebound from keeper Mo Gough was pounced on by the Wapping attack and despite a bit of a goal line tussle the ball crossed the line.

Bar had some further attacking opportunities towards the end of the game and some short corners of their own which Wapping kept away.  The game finished 2-1 to Potters Bar. The home team were very happy with their first performance of the season and are looking forward to their next game this coming Saturday away in Hertford.
