Ladies 1st XI Match Report
Potters Bar 1st XI v Chelmsford 3rd XI
02 October 2010 | by Faye Jowett
Potters Bar ladies looked keen and sprightly during the warm up and this continued as the match began but although Bar had most of the possession they failed to score. Sarah tried to blame this on some poor umpiring decisions but the rest of the team felt she wasn’t quite up to the pace. The situation improved however with the arrival of Vanessa Porter and Faye Jowett on the pitch which seemed to lift everyone and a few moments later Caroline Partridge scored from a penalty corner, a goal which Claire Moore claimed was due to the presence of Faye on the pitch, which was impressive as she had yet to touch the ball. Bar continued to power on and a quickly taken self-pass by Sue Richardson, which she followed with some fancy stick work, resulted in an excellent goal, which impressed the supporters (or one in particular!). A further goal from Kerry McCann sealed the first half. Sarah Jowett had arrived late for the game and after her poor performance in the first half there were concerns at half time that she might be cut from the team for future games.
Bar went from strength to strength in the second half with some excellent passing and tackling. Anna Walker showed great skill in the centre, as did Swanni and Kerry scored a breathtaking goal in the roof of the net which was closely followed by a further fantastic goal by Caroline Partridge. It was at this time Sarah Jowett was overheard saying ‘I’m not going to let anyone steal my Westoby Shield, I’m going to hog the ball until I score’. Shortly after this Sarah scored a mediocre goal following a goal mouth scramble in which Lucy Edwards had shot on goal but Sarah Jowett tapped it in. This led to Lucy describing Sarah as a ‘thieving witch’. This was closely followed by a second goal from Sarah Jowett and finally a goal for Lucy Edwards, who unfortunately chipped some of her beautiful pink nail varnish in the process. Caroline Stanners was unlucky not to score after a magnificent run down the wing. Goalie Mo Gough had a restful game sat down in her goal thanks to the strength of her defenders – Sue Richardson, Faye Jowett, Karen Lawson and Claire Moore who saved Mo having to take an active role in the game.
Overall, an impressive result which saw Bar playing well together as a team.
