Ladies 2nd XI Match Report

Bishops Stortford 4th XI v Potters Bar Ladies 2nd XI

08 January 2011 | by Esther Strous

Once Upon A Time…..After a three week break the Ladies Guru’s were full of mixed emotions for their first game back vs Bishops Stortford 4’s after the Christmas break, some excitement to put ball to stick and some nerves due to lack of no game play for so long.

Potters Bar lost the toss and got first push-back. This proved positive as we maintained possession from the whistle and attacks in Bishops Stortford half were many. A couple of missed opportunities by a well positioned Chris Field on left post would of seen the score board start very early in the game for PB.

The PB mid field was almost as far as Stortford could get when they had possession due to excellent intercepting, control and driving it to the forwards by Michelle, Clare and Shelley. This play eventually resulting in a short corner. This was lost but PB quickly won the ball back and again fired into the D. Another short corner awarded and this time there was no mistake. Shelley Farmer injected to Esther Strous who hit it towards the left corner where Shelley swept it in for a 1-0 lead.

It wasn’t long before yet another short corner was awarded to PB. Again Shelley Farmer injecting to Clare who put the ball, again at left corner resulting in a second goal for Shelley as she repeated her movement of the first goal. 2-0 PB!!!

We remained the attacking side and with about 7 minutes or thereabouts left in the half a cross in from Esther into the D got the end of Clare’s stick who took a shot at goal but to make sure it went in Vanessa Garner got the ending touch and PB went 3-0 into the lead.A brilliant first half by the Guru’s with the score at 3-0.

The second half started slightly different. Bishops Stortford came back fighting and within a few seconds PB defence found themselves very busy. The lack of game play was showing in the Guru’s after such a well played first half and tired passes and crosses were being intercepted by the younger Stortford side who were driving the ball into our half looking to even the score. Eventually one Stortford player found some space and got the ball to hit the back board making the score 3-1.

With a lot more chances as they were taking advantage of PB’s unforced errors, Stortford could of easily got level but brilliance in the defence by Ruth, Glenys Chisw, Laura Cullen and Ashleigh Rouse kept the ball out of scoring range and the hard work paid off when the final whistle blew.

Man of the Match : Ashleigh Rouse

Wooden Spoon : Michelle Lewis for yet again passing the ball in the air instead of on the ground.

Final Score: Bishops Stortford 1-3 Potters Bar

Goal Scorers: Shelley Farmer (2), Vanessa Garner

Team: Glenys Chiswell, Ruth Spencer, Laura Cullen, Ashleigh Rouse, Shelley Farmer, Clare Rose, Michelle Lewis, Vanessa Garner, Chris Field and Esther Strous
