Ladies 1st XI Match Report

Crostyx 2nd XI v Potters Bar Ladies 1st XI

12 November 2011 | by Anna Walker

Bar ladies journeyed to Walthamstow to face the newly promoted team. Currently sitting just above Bar in the league our ladies knew they were going to have to work hard to maintain their winning ways. With a pre-match team talk consisting mainly of a plea for determination, hard work and not making  life difficult by going several goals down by half time – Bar started strong.

Crostyx came out hard with some well worked moves allowing them to switch the ball round the back to try and break through the Bar defence of Jowett, Richardson and Gilbey. Luckily for the Bar skipper the pre-match plea was adhered to and they soon took control of the game putting extensive pressure on the Crostyx defence through some skilful hockey down the right between Gilbey, Nevin and Farmer but despite all the effort and team work bar were unable to convert. With the first 15 minutes being camped on the right side of the pitch with attack after attack Bar finally managed to find that final touch with Edwards leading by example and slipping the ball calmly past the keeper. This new found confidence enabled Bar to take control and move the ball around more with some uncharacteristic transfers through defence allowing bar to attack from all angles.  The Crostyx defence demonstrated why they had been promoted this season with many spectacular saves on the goal line following short corners and crosses alike but with the Crostyx frustration building bar were able to take advantage following a flurry of crosses into the D with Jowett skilfully executing one of her trademark manoeuvres bringing the score up to 2-0.

Half time came with a yellow card for the opposition as a result of ‘helping out the umpires’. Determined to maintain their lead and take advantage of the absent Crostyx player  Bar worked hard from the whistle despite some spectacular team play from Stanners, Jowett and Edwards bar were unable to convert and before long Crostyx took advantage and managed to surprise the Bar keeper who had previously had little to do. With the score now 2-1 Bar soon responded with a final goal from Edwards following yet more hard work and corners to lead the team to their well deserved 3-1 victory.  A commendable achievement following some well-connected team work which Bar hope to build on over the coming weeks.

Final Score: Crostyx 1 - 3 Potters Bar

Goal Scorers: Lucy Edwards (2), Sarah Jowett
