Mens 1st XI Match Report
Bishops Stortford 2n XI v Potters Bar Men's 1st XI
15 October 2011 | by Ben Graham
It was another case of what went wrong as the Bar lost their 4th on the trot. This one was especially frustrating as they could have been Bar’s points.
It all started so well, with good possession early on leading to some good opportunities on goal. Cuff was a welcome return making an immediate impact in the 1st half. Tomkins to made a good start playing out of position at left midfield. It was a joy to witness a flat stick tackle; this was quite remarkable, as I’ve never seen Tomkins bend his knees more than 10 degrees.
The attacks continued along with the near misses. The score still 0-0 20 minutes in the Bar defence felt relatively unthreatened. Yet Bar conceded to a short corner a few minutes before half time. The call at half time was patience, we were making chances it felt just like a matter of time before they started to go in.
The 2nd half proved to be equally frustrating, there was some great hassling from our forwards which lead to a couple good opportunities, one of which gave Turpin a one on one which forced another good save from there keeper.
As we struggled to finish credit was due to Bishops Stortford who finished well a couple good moves in the 2nd half giving them a 3-0 lead.
All in all a frustrating day for the Bar, who need some points.
To be positive briefly there were one or 2 things we can be pleased about. There was some really good performances coming from midfield. As our usual style of quick breaks does not seem to be suited to this league, more patient build up is required from the mid-field to build attacks. Encouragingly this is happening. Li made a great impact wherever he was needed at, with good movement on and off the ball he made gaps through the middle. Brett and Chittleborough are looking more and more comfortable on the ball able to soak up pressure and keep the ball moving. Whybrow and Cuff were able to make the most of spaces created by others. Also special mention to Tomkins who tackled someone. But jokes aside a good performance and kept the ball moving on nice and early, early, early!
