Potters Bar Juniors show potential against tough opposition
By Peter Simmons on 17 January 2011
At long last the weather relented to allow the Potters Bar Juniors play their first fixtures of the season.

The Under 14 Girls team travelled to Hitchin to play Welwyn Garden City, Hertford and Blueharts. In the first match Potters Bar shared 12 goals with Welwyn in a 6-6 draw with Caitlin Creeley scoring all six. However it was real team effort with excellent defending from Rebecca Yates, Charlotte Andyipan and Emma Page, some good attacking runs from Jessica Levy and good tackling and linking play from Daisy Rabbit, Suzannah Donovan and Georgia Mortimer Tracey. For the first five minutes against Hertford Potters Bar were run ragged by very quick and skilful opponents who were quickly 3-0 ahead. An excellent goal from Caitlin Creeley and much improved play from all the team led to a 3-1 deficit at half time that became a very creditable 4-2 final result. The final game against a very strong Blueharts team was a match too far for Potters Bar but hopefully they learnt from the experience of playing against juniors who have been in the game for many years.

The Under 12 Mixed team were a couple of players short for the matches at Watford but the opposition very kindly loaned a couple of players. Although Potters Bar lost both games against very experienced opposition, West Herts (0-2) and Blueharts (0-5), they played really well given it was the first proper game of hockey for three of the team. The newcomers, George Fennell, Andrew Blakemore and Ethan Koumis, combined really well in attack and were well supported by some very determined midfield play from Jessica Hawes while Olivia Robinson was very determined in defence.
Nick Page played for the joint Welwyn/Potters Bar Under 14 Boys team that came up against an incredibly strong Harpenden team full of JAC players and an only slightly weaker West Herts team. Nick and his Welwyn team mates battled hard and showed excellent promise despite relentless pressure.
