A goal and an assist on his promotion from the second team for Tony Sayers and two more goals from Ed Newbery see Potters Bar through a tough game against West Herts 4th XI
On a good day for sport, with the sun out, a fresh wind in the air and the England v South Africa rugby final
only hours away, Potters Bar came out with spring in their step against the division's 2nd placed team West Herts, who were only
one place below leaders Potters Bar.
Potters Bar started well and pegged back West Herts who were finding it difficult to clear the ball with their 16 meter hits. The first goal came after some solid pressure from Bar. Ed Newbery, causing problems on West Herts' left flank near the D, pulled the ball back to Tony Sayers whose lifted shot hit the keepers' pads and rebounded into the danger area. Mark Turpin was first to the rebound to tuck it away.
The second goal was set up by Paul Brady, whose pass from the top of the circle found Ed Newbery. The West Herts keeper did well to get a good stick to the ball, but the shot from Newbery had enough power to dribble over the line.
In the second half, Bar came out knowing the next goal was all-important. A West Herts goal would put them right back in the match.
On the other hand, a Potters Bar goal would virtually kill off the match. As it happened, it was Potters Bar who got the goal.
What looked like a neat finish from Newbery had the Bar forwards celebrating but the ball was not deemed to have crossed the line.
However, the resulting long corner found a good run from Sayers in the circle. Sayers turned away from goal to give himself time
and space to pull the trigger and his shot flew into the net.
With the victory assured, Bar won a number of short corners but failed on numerous occasions to add to their already handsome league goal difference. West Herts sometimes looking dangerous on the break, but couldn't get past the resolute Jon Yates, having a strong game at centre-back. It was left to Newbery to wrap things up, with a finish from Andy Stokes' pass.
