Seven different players score for Potters Bar in their toughest game of the season so far.
Playing a team with a 100% record in games they didn't concede, NE14HOCKEY East League Division Six South West leaders Potters Bar 1st XI expected a tough game against Luton Vagrants 1st XI. They weren't wrong as Luton showed great tackling ability and had one the hardest-hitting centre backs Bar have come up against.
With long hit outs from the back, Luton were able to penetrate Bar's midfield and the Luton forwards put the Bar defence under pressure for the first 10 minutes of the match. Winning several short corners, Luton couldn't quite find a way into the net to capitalise on their early pressure. Gradually, Bar fought their way into the match and applied some pressure of their own.
After a couple of unsuccessful short corners, Bar reverted to a tried and tested formula which enabled Andy Latham to blast the ball against the backboard to put them ahead.
This gave the home side confidence and as half-time approached they scored again. Dave Ensor and Tony Sayers combined down the right-wing and when the cross came to Ed Newbery he hit the goal of the game, a terrific undercut shot over the diving keeper and high into the net.
After half-time and with Luton pushing forward to try to get something from the match, Bar found space in the midfield and on the right wing. Mark Turpin scored Bar's third goal after Owen Hughes completed his pass to Turpin at the second attempt. He also exchanged one-two's with Newbery from the half-way line into the circle before he narrowly missed with the goalkeeper beaten.
As Luton pushed their hard-hitting defender into midfield, they enjoyed a lot of the territorial advantage. But once again, Bar's defence worked hard so goalkeeper Jonny Weller barely got a touch.
With gaps in Luton's defence, Bar began to take advantage on the counter attack and Chris Wood got his second of the season, beating his highest campaign total for the last two years. His finish was well taken, wrong footing the goalkeeper from Newbery's cross.
Andrew Stokes then got Bar's fifth, stopping the ball, turning on the spot and putting his shot into the corner of the goal.
Centre back Jon Yates surprised everyone by appearing from nowhere in front of goal to put away Bar's sixth goal of the afternoon. Finally, the provider turned finisher as Dave Ensor, used to setting up many of Bar's goals, decided to pinch one himself.
Bar can be happy to improve upon their huge league goal difference but the score line was enhanced by Luton Vagrants' enterprising play and belied a tough game.
