| Why
do it the easy way? On Saturday a depleted Potters Bar squad took on Enfield and Winchmore Hill 4's at their ground in Southbury Road. It was quite clear from the beginning that energy levels were low - perhaps the result of too much Christmas cheer. After last week's hard fought victory against Welwyn 4th's, the side looked tired and and lacked the incisive finishing characteristic of previous games. Passing was good from the start and whilst Potters Bar put Enfield's goal under a lot of pressure, some excellent goalkeeping by the Enfield keeper kept them in contention. The pressure eventually told as Andy Latham got a late touch to put the ball in the net. During the first half the ball rarely got out of the Enfield half. When it did, the Enfield attack lacked conviction and the ever reliable defence of Spencer Hunt, Cliff Hawkins and Terry Mabbett were equal to the task. Later in the half Potters Bar were awarded a penalty after some scrappy action in the Enfield D. Spencer Hunt stepped up only to see the Enfield keeper parry the ball away. Within a few minutes Potters Bar were awarded another penalty. A confident Chris Edwards volunteered to take it only to see the keeper save again low to his left hand side. After a stern talk at half time from Hawkins, the team's acting captain, Potters Bar came out for the second half determined to push ahead. The passing had improved and there were some flashes of brilliance from Owen Hughes and Toby Seaman on the wings and Liam Frame and Paul Brady in midfield. Potters Bar pressure was yet again rewarded in the second half with a penalty. This time, Adam Pigden tried his luck only to hit it straight into the keeper's chest missing another chance to put the game out of Enfield's reach. Just when it seemed that the day was destined to end with only one goal, Potters Bar were awarded their fourth penalty, surely some kind of record. Liam Frame showed that he is a talent for the future by placing the ball high into the top of the net and extending Potters Bar's lead to 2. Regrettably that is how the game ended. Repeated attempts by Andy Latham and Adam Pigden to blast the ball past the keeper resulted in brilliant saves. For the last 10 minutes Andy Bye replaced Andy Latham and the team tightened into a more defensive unit. In spite of two short corners awarded right at the end of the game, neither found the backboards. The win ensures Potters Bar go into the Christmas break unbeaten and at the top of the table.
