OPPOSITION Welwyn Garden City 3rd XI
VENUE Away
DATE 03-03-2007

RESULT Drew 0-0

On Saturday, Potters Bar faced their local rivals, Welwyn Garden City. With only one point and one league place separating the two teams, a tough match was expected. Both teams started well and there were plenty of midfield battles as both sides looked to gain an early advantage.

The first chance was a while in coming but it fell to Bar. David Fennell, full of confidence from scoring a goal the previous week, tackled a Welwyn player on the Welwyn 25 yard and dribbled round another before passing to Andy Latham. Latham's cross from the bye line beat a couple of Welwyn defenders but Andy Stokes could not make a good enough contact to steer the ball goalward.

With both teams largely cancelling each other out in the first half there was very little goal mouth action. The only other incident to note was that Potters Bar picked up their first green card of the season for captain Paul Brady's rough challenge on a breaking opponent.

The second half started in the same vein as the first, with both sides struggling to dominate. Before long, Bar were playing the better hockey and having more and more of the possession. Andy Stokes was again involved as his shot from a cross hit a post.

As the shadows lengthened, David Fennell managed to get a stick on a cross and divert the ball up and goalward. The Welwyn keeper was wrong-footed but somehow stuck out a glove and knocked the ball wide.

With the end of the match nearing, Bar were camped in Welwyn's half although Welwyn looked threatening on the occasional break. Bar won a number of short corners but couldn't make them count and a draw was the deserved result.

This week, Bar face a resurgent West Herts team with the match starting at 2.30pm at Dame Alice Owens.
