It was a sunny but windy day when Potters Bar travelled to Southgate to complete their league fixtures with a re-arranged match against Southgate Adelaide 2nd XI. Adelaide started the stronger team and looked more comfortable in possession. Unfortunately for Bar, many of their players had difficulty stopping and controlling the ball on a pitch surface slightly different to what they were used to.
Although having more of the possession, Adelaide did not create many opportunities. Bar were playing some good hockey in patches with bright runs up the wings by Andy Stokes and Tony Sayers. On one occasion, after cutting back inside following a dribble up the left wing, Stokes found himself with time and space to shoot, but could only top the ball and Southgate easily cleared. The closest Bar came to a goal in the 1st half was a flicked shot into the side netting from Owen Hughes.
As half-time approached, Adelaide took the lead from a short corner. As the ball was injected in, Adelaide passed the ball around the onrushing defenders to their right and the shot flew into the goal off the bottom of the right hand post.
Southgate again started the stronger team in the second half and Bar were staring at their first defeat since mid-February. However, Bar got back into the match as Ed Newbery moved into the centre of the park and Roy Hill returned from a minor injury sustained in the first half. Another run from Stokes down the right-wing and a pass to Tony Sayers cut the Adelaide defence open and Sayers' pass to Adam Pigden led to the equaliser.
In the final minute, in an almost identical move to Bar's first goal, this time Stokes dribbled the ball into the circle from the right. Ed Newbury's loud shouts for the ball drew a couple of defenders and left Pigden free again. This time he scored at the second attempt and Bar held out for a marvellous victory.
