Potters Bar hosted the East Leagues South West division 6 leaders Bishops Stortford 5th XI on Saturday expecting a tough match as Stortford had scored 30 goals in their previous 5 games. Surprisingly, Potters Bar started the stronger team and came close from straight from the push back.

Chris Wood and Paul Brady were both playing well and beginning to dominate in midfield. However it was a mix-up between these two players that handed the ball to the Stortford midfielder not long into the half. The Stortford player drove into the Bar circle and shot hard across the goalkeeper to give Stortford the lead.

At the other end, Bar were applying plenty of pressure but not creating many chances as Stortford defended in numbers. Bar had only one short corner in the half which gave Andy Latham a shot at goal but it was saved and cleared by the defence.

In the second half, Bar were looking to hold out for the first ten minutes and then stage a comeback. But it was not to be. An attack down the right wing by Stortford led to a cross to the top of the circle which was struck past the keeper to give Stortford a two goal lead.

Bishops Stortford were now playing better hockey and from a short corner they made it three goals, the ball unfortunately going under the keeper's feet. Despite this, the keeper Andy Stokes was playing well and making some great saves in only his first outing in goal.

In an attempt to get back into the game, Bar's Ed Newberry stepped into midfield and his reverse stick tackling was too good for the Stortford players, many times robbing them of the ball and starting a Bar attack. Bar's two young wingers, James Latham and David Fennell, were finding their feet. James Latham managed to get behind the defense down the right side and his airborne shot struck the Stortford goal keeper on the legs. Amazingly, James's dad Andy Latham was on hand to nudge the loose ball into the goal to give Bar some hope.

The hope was short lived as Stortford scored again from a defensive mistake to run out easy winners 4-1, although the game was a lot closer than the score line suggested.

This week Bar travel to struggling Rickmansworth in a game they need to win to stay out of the relegation zone.
