With captain Paul Brady missing and a make-shift starting eleven, Potters Bar travelled to Berkhamsted looking to extend their unbeaten league run to 8 games. From the push back, Bar's young team started well and soon forced a short corner. From this first opportunity, Andy Latham received the ball at the top of the D with plenty of time to shoot. His shot was well struck into the far corner of the goal to give Bar an early 1-0 lead. This was extended 10 minutes into the game when Ed Newbery surged through the middle of the Berkhamsted defense. Although he was brought down by the Berkhamsted keeper, the ball fell kindly to Andy Latham who pushed it into the open goal with his reverse stick.
Berkhamsted then started to play their first real hockey of the match and found that as soon as they got beyond Bar's midfield, they could attack the defense with some success. However, Richard Atkins was excellent for Bar in central defence and broke up many of the attacks. Those that got past him were equally well dealt with by Bar's keeper David Smith.
Shortly before the break, Berkhamsted attacked down the right wing and crossed to the penalty spot. The ball was well turned in to bring Bar's lead down to one goal.
In the second half, Bar played with an extra defender to try to combat their defensive weakness. This seemed to work as they were able to soak up the attacks that came. From a Berkhamsted short corner, the ball was cleared to Tony Sayers whose through ball was latched onto by Andy Latham. With only the keeper to beat, Latham unselfishly squared the ball to Ed Newbery who had a simple finish to give Bar a comfortable 3-1 lead. Bar then controlled the rest of the game with Berkhamsted hardly having a chance on goal.
This week Bar look for revenge against a Cheshunt side who narrowly won the two teams' encounter earlier this season. The game starts at 2.30pm at Dame Alice Owen's school.
