Match Report by Danny Becker...

A bright early Autumn day in late October (that’s global warming for you!) saw the arrival of Hertford 3rd XI to the Alice Owen Astro.

Pushing back dead on 2.30pm (which meant yours truly was a second late – sorry!) Bar made the better start and for the first half were well on top. With the ever reliable Andy Latham up front providing the firepower, and the midfield and defence holding steady it was no surprise that after 20 minutes, as the ball fell to Andy in the D, the only possible outcome was Bar taking the lead.

A period of Bar pressure followed, including a number of short corners but we were unable to capitalise until shortly before the break, when a free hit from Danny Becker in midfield found Andy Latham whose precise pass found Adam Pigden’s stick, resulting in a clinical finish to double the advantage.

Hertford’s sole chance in the first half saw their best player ghost round half of the Bar defence, when, with the goal at his mercy and just the keeper to beat, the rather large pads of the excellent Alan Field intervened ensuring that lead remained in tact.

The second half saw a reversal of fortunes. A lack of concentration from Bar saw Hertford come back into the game as they started to dominate the midfield, reducing Bar to some “long ball” play. Despite the pressure, Hertford were unable to get a clear shot at goal and this was testament to the steady defensive qualities of Adam Reader, Spencer Hunt, Cliff Hawkins and Dave Frame and the discipline of Paul Brady, Chris Wood, Andy Bye, Daniel Adams, Adam Pigden and Owen in midfield.

Eventually Bar managed to break out of defence and a sideline hit from Andy Bye found Danny Becker in the Hertford D who managed to flick the ball on, through the keeper’s legs almost smashing the backboard in the process.

3–0 and the game in the bag, a further period of Hertford pressure led almost immediately to a bundled goal from them, but Bar managed to hold on in fine style ensuring that they recorded their second consecutive win.

Man of the match – Adam Reader
Special mention – Paul Brady’s tea!
